Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What should I bring to my appointment?

Answer: For either your virtual or in person visit, it is helpful to be prepared. We appreciate a list of physicians you currently see, medications you are taking, recent glucometer results if applicable, and pharmacy you use.

Question: Is there parking available?

Answer: There is no parking in the building. Pay parking is available on the streets surrounding the office. There is limited surface and underground parking in 301 East Columbia Street. Free parking is available up the hill, a short walk from the clinic. The Sapperton Skytrain station is 1 block from the office.

Question: What should I expect for my first appointment?

Answer: Drs Barts and Shu both work with trainees in the office. For new appointments, you may see a resident doctor initially, who will then review your case with you and Dr. Barts or Dr. Shu. Please note that consultations may take up to 60 minutes. The doctor will take a history of your concern, do any pertinent physical exam, review ordered lab work and previous investigations. They will then provide a plan that may include additional testing, lifestyle changes, or medications.

Question: I have diabetes, why am I seeing a hormone doctor?

Answer: Insulin is the hormone associated with diabetes, whether you are living with type 1, 2 or another type of diabetes. While there are many ways to treat diabetes, the underlying problem is that there is not enough insulin being produced or the body is resistant to its effects.
